Almy Pojoy

“I learned that researching and doing labs is really fun.”

Almy Pojoy is a Sullivan high school senior from the summer ETHOS program. Pojoy was partnered with Victoria Oladipupo and placed in Dr. Cavanaugh’s lab for the 6-week experience. Their lab focused on different types of flies and how their brains work. Pojoy said her favorite parts of the lab were looking at slides in the microscope and working with the flies everyday – loading, sorting and watching Dr. Cavanaugh dissect them.

Loyola undergraduates were also in the lab, and worked with the ETHOS students as well. “I had so much fun working with the undergrads,” Pojoy said. “I got to see them do presentations and they helped us a lot too.”

One of Pojoy’s most valued takeaways from her time with the program was the information she learned about circadian rhythms. “I can support others like my parents or my family now if they struggle with sleeping or their body clock,” Pojoy said.

Although she said she is not as interested in the neuroscience field anymore, Pojoy discovered a greater interest in the process of research and experimentation. “I learned that researching and doing labs is really fun,” Pojoy said.
