Emily Macedo
“This research lab opportunity made me open my eyes to wanting to be involved in research.”
Emily Ramirez Macedo is a Senn high school senior who worked in Dr. Grella’s lab during the 6-week summer ETHOS program. Macedo and her partner Arzoo Rozani investigated memory overlap in PTSD in their research and were able to complete many hands-on experiments. “Working in the lab in general was something I really liked to do, so it's something I’d want to pursue in the future,” Macedo said.
One of the challenges Macedo faced during her experience in the lab was watching profusions, as it was unlike anything she’d seen before. However, slicing brains, placing them on slides and observing through microscopes was an interesting aspect of the lab, according to Macedo. “I’ve always had a very big interest in biology,” Macedo said. “I probably want to work in a lab when I go to college.”
Macedo said another valuable part of the ETHOS program was being able to witness and converse with Loyola students on campus and in the labs. “Watching the Loyola students… It was very nice to see there's a balance between social life and school life,” Macedo said.
