Melissa Villagomez
“I love science, and maybe chemistry is my right pathway.”
For six weeks of the summer, Senn high school senior Melissa Villagomez participated in the summer ETHOS program, ending in August. She and her lab partner Madisen Shurney were members of Dr. Esipova’s team. According to Villagomez, this group worked with chemicals, labeled proteins, learned about organic chemistry and neuroscience, and had fun!
Villagomez said she initially heard about the program in her biology class and was intrigued by the opportunity to dive into research and see what it is really like working in a lab.
One of the most important takeaways she received by the end of summer ETHOS, according to Villagomez, was that she may have found her calling.
“I’m still undecided,” Villagomez said. “But, I learned about how maybe I love science and maybe chemistry is my right pathway.”
Although she is unsure where, Villagomez would like to attend a university after her senior year at Senn. “I will definitely take the [ETHOS] knowledge for my next year,” Villagomez said. “Because bio is going to be hard next year and I think I’m ready for it.”
