“I’ve been interested in a science job basically my entire life, and this kind of solidified it.”
Senn high school student Phoebe Stein worked in Dr. Chen’s lab during the 6-week summer ETHOS program and was partnered with Dia Williams. Stein’s research lab focused on collecting data from muscle stimulation of mice, brain wave readings and 3D printing. “The electrodes were connected to wires which were then connected to a computer, and that’s how we were able to read the information,” Stein said. “We were also taught how to solder and make 3D printed objects, as well as printing them out.”
Some of Stein’s favorite aspects of her time in the lab were that she was able to work with others, handle mice and learn about stimulation in the brian. “I really enjoyed this program because it gave us all a chance to experience what it's like in the STEM field and in the working world — kind of to experience a more adult job,” Stein said.
Stein said that the ETHOS program was an enjoyable experience overall, and it allowed her to deepen her love of STEM and neuroscience. “I've been interested in a science job basically my entire life, and this kind of solidified it,” Stein said.
