Celebrating Our Science Master Teacher Leaders: A Journey of Growth, Leadership, and Impact

As the final year of the Science Master Teacher Leader Academy (MTLA) program comes to a close, we celebrate a remarkable group of educators whose passion for science, commitment to student learning, and drive for continuous improvement have made a lasting impact on their classrooms and across our district.

Over two years, the MTLA program, created in partnership with Loyola’s Center for Science and Math Education (CSME) and the Chicago Public Schools’ Department of STEM, brought K–8 science teachers together to deepen instructional practice grounded in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and strengthen teacher leadership. Their growth as leaders brought three-dimensional science learning to life in their schools, and at the heart of their journey was a dedicated coach who served as both a thought partner and cheerleader, walking with them every step of the way.

The first year of the cohort lends itself to honing their craft. Each teacher selected a learning condition (classroom community, student voice, and feedback for growth) as their focal point and monitored their progress by recording their instruction and analyzing student work samples at various points throughout the year. Through deep reflection and feedback, teachers sharpened their skills and strengthened the connection between their practices and student learning.

In the second year, the focus shifted from the classroom to teacher leadership. Teachers worked closely with their coach to assess their strengths and opportunities for growth aligned to key teacher leadership indicators. With clarity and purpose, they designed and implemented leadership activities tailored to their unique school environment. They supported their peers, shared best practices, facilitated professional learning, and served as champions of NGSS-aligned instruction in their schools. Whether modeling inquiry-based learning, guiding curriculum shifts, or mentoring colleagues, our teacher leaders embodied what it means to lead from the classroom.

On the final day together, the cohort gathered to celebrate the journey they had taken, both individually and collectively. They reflected on their life experiences, the lessons learned, and the transformative moments that had shaped them as educators and leaders. Their leadership stories were powerful, inspiring everyone to walk boldly, take meaningful risks, and stay anchored in their authentic selves.

As we honor their final year in the program, we also look ahead with gratitude and excitement. These educators leave the program equipped not only with deeper expertise in NGSS but also with the tools, voice, and vision to lead change. The legacy of this cohort is not just in what they accomplished but in who they’ve become.

To our Science Teacher Leaders: Your dedication, tenacity, and heart have propelled this work forward. Because of you, science classrooms across the district are spaces where students feel safe to explore, challenge ideas, and make sense of phenomena together.
