The Sacred Heart of Jesus: A Global Jesuit Devotion

A Vision of Divine Passion for the World

The modern form of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus dates to the years 1673-1675. St. Margaret Mary Alocoque, V.H.M., a nun in Paray-le-Monial (France), reported receiving divine revelations. They included directions for promoting devotion to the Sacred Heart, a fiery vision of passionate divine love. Although Alocoque’s reports were initially met with suspicion, she convinced her confessor and confidant, St. Claude La Colombière, S.J., who became her fervent disciple. Following Colombière’s own zealous promotion efforts, the Sacred Heart eventually spread across the globe as the primary Jesuit devotion.
