Día de los Muertos
Celebrating Art, Culture, and Identity with Carina Yepez
![]()
The Language Learning Resource Center was honored to welcome Chicago-based educator and artist Carina Yepez, whose family roots trace back to Guanajuato, Mexico. Yepez’s visit, coordinated by Dr. Paulina Dzieza, offered our community a chance to engage with her powerful exploration of matriarchal traditions and the interconnected stories of Chicago immigrants through the art of quilting. Using sewing as her primary medium, Yepez delves into the techniques of domesticity to express her family’s narratives and promote healing of ancestral trauma. Her intricate works—featuring appliqué layering and floral motifs—bridge craft and fine art while honoring her cultural heritage. Yepez has exhibited her art widely, including at The Art Institute of Chicago, the National Museum of Mexican Art, the Zhou B Brothers Art Center, and internationally at the Dom Museum Wien in Vienna, Austria. Her visit inspired meaningful conversations about creativity, identity, and cultural storytelling within the LLRC community.

Yepez’s artwork was displayed along the hallway walls of the Language Learning Resource Center, allowing students and faculty to experience her pieces up close. The vibrant quilts and intricate textile compositions drew the attention of everyone passing through, sparking curiosity and conversation. The exhibit provided an inspiring glimpse into Yepez’s artistic vision and offered our community an opportunity to reflect on themes of heritage, identity, and storytelling woven into each piece.
