Online Course Definitions
Distance learning courses are defined by how much material is delivered completely online. Online courses are fully online with no in-person components but may require some real-time (synchronous), virtual class sessions. Hybrid courses utilize a combination of both in-person and online class sessions. HyFlex courses have a flexible course structure that gives students the option of attending sessions in-person, participating online, or doing both.
Loyola University Chicago uses the following categories and definitions for online, hybrid, and HyFlex courses.
Online Courses
Online courses require no in-person meetings during an academic term; all course activities are conducted via the internet. Regular and substantive interaction between students and instructor(s) is required.
Hybrid Courses
Hybrid courses use a combination of online and in-person meetings during an academic term. Regular and substantive interaction between the students and the instructor(s) is required.
HyFlex Courses
HyFlex courses use the components of hybrid learning in a flexible course structure that gives students the option of attending sessions in-person, participating online, or doing both. Students may change their mode of attendance weekly or by topic, according to need or preference.
