PRG Event: Mateusz Ozimek

March 16, 2026

The Loyola Phenomenology Research Group will be hosting a research event on Friday, March 20 featuring a visiting PhD student, Mateusz Ozimek (Maria Curie-Skłodowska University), and two of our own PhD students, Omar Khali and Dahlia Young. Mateusz will give a paper entitled "Psychotherapy as Secular Confession: A Genealogical Perspective.” Commentaries will then be given by Omar and Dahlia.
This event will take place from 3pm-5pm in Cuneo 302. A reception will follow in the lobby outside of the Philosophy department, on the third floor of Crown Center.

SPLW Lecture: Dr. Matthew Lindauer

The Social-Political-Legal Workshop is pleased to welcome Dr. Matthew Lindauer (Brooklyn College/CUNY Graduate Center). On Wednesday, February 25, Dr. Lindauer will give a lecture on "Global Justice and Moral Motivation". Please join us on February 25 from 3pm-5pm in Cuneo 311.
This event is co-sponsored by the Social-Political-Legal Workshop, the Philosophy Department, and the Ignacio Ellacuria, S.J. Chair in Social Ethics.

2026 John Grant Lecture

The Philosophy Department and the Bioethics Minor Program invite you to join us for the annual John Grant Lecture in Healthcare Ethics on Thursday, March 26 at 4:30pm in Mundelein Hall 1410. This year's speaker, Dr. Jason T. Eberl (St. Louis University), will present on "Genetics, Ethics, and Khaaaaan! Transhumanist Themes in Star Trek and Other Sci-Fi". A reception will follow. We hope to see you there!
This lecture is sponsored by the John F. Grant, MD Endowment in Health Care Ethics.

Annual Big Questions Lecture

PRG Book Launch: Dr. Michael Andrews

The Loyola Phenomenology Research Group will host a book launch for Dr. Michael Andrews's recently published books One (Un)Like the Other (SUNY Press, 2024) and Ethics and Metaphysics in the Philosophy of Edith Stein (Springer, 2022) on Friday, January 30. Commentary will be provided by Dr. Peg Birmingham (DePaul University). Please join us on January 30 from 3:00pm to 5:00pm in Cuneo 302. John Grant Awards for Health Equity

For spring 2026 three Loyola students will be selected for a John Grant Award in Health Equity. Each award is valued at $2000!
Undergraduate students with a demonstrated interest in and commitment to addressing health equity are encouraged to apply. Applicants do not need to be declared Bioethics Minors. Annual Philosophy Debate

October 9, 2025

Please mark your calendar for the Annual Philosophy Debate! The debate will take place Thursday, October 30 at 6pm in Flanner Hall 133.
This year two Philosophy department faculty, Dr. Eyo Ewara and Dr. Jennifer Parks, will be joined by two Philosophy Majors, Judah Hays and Faith Mercer, to debate the topic "Is Society Progressing?". There will be free pizza and all are welcome. Please join us!

Congratulations, Dr. Gordon and Dr. Vukov!

The Philosophy Department is thrilled to announce that two department members were recently recognized, alongside other faculty and staff award winners, at University Convocation. Dr. Joy Gordon received the Alice B. Hayes Award for Advising and Mentoring. This award recognizes faculty who demonstrate exceptional commitment to advising and mentoring students both inside and outside the classroom.
Dr. Joseph Vukov received the St. Ignatius Loyola Award for Excellence in Teaching. This award honors a faculty member who exemplifies excellence in teaching, mentoring, global awareness, and the promotion of justice, always guided by cura personalis and the Jesuit mission.
