Please join us for visiting scholar Gabriele Parrino's lecture, "Breaking the Heart of the World: The Meaning of Romanness in in Hegel, Heidegger, and Hannah Arendt". The lecture will take place on Friday, April 26 from 4:30pm to 6:00pm in Cuneo 302.
Gabriele is visiting us from the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa. His talk will consider how Arendt's appropriation of Roman political thought offers a plural conception of political foundation that challenges the nationalism of Hegel and Heidegger.

The Loyola Phenomenology Research Group is pleased to welcome Dr. Susanne Ravn (University of Southern Denmark). Dr. Ravn will be giving a talk titled "Kinesthesia 'in Action': a Critically Loaded Phenomenological Account for Analyzing the Dynamic Qualities of Movement".

New Podcast from Dr. Richard Kim

Dr. Richard Kim has recently launched a new podcast on Chinese philosophy, "This is the Way", co-hosted with Dr. Justin Tiwald (Hong Kong University). "This is the Way" explores philosophical themes by reflecting on significant Chinese texts and through interviews with scholars of Chinese thought. Dr. Kim and Dr. Tiwald aim to offer discussions that are informative and accessible to a broad audience. We invite you to check it out!

2024 John Grant Lecture

Please join for us the annual John Grant Lecture in Healthcare Ethics on Wednesday, March 20 at 3:00pm in the Galvin Auditorium, Sullivan Center. This year's speaker is Dr. Stephen Doran, MD, a neurosurgeon at MD West ONE in Nebraska. He will be speaking on "Dying Well", the topic of his recently published book, To Die Well: A Catholic Neurosurgeon's Guide to the End of Life. The lecture is free to attend and a reception will follow. We hope to see you there!
This lecture is co-sponsored by the John F. Grant, MD Endowment, the Department of Philosophy, and the Bioethics Minor program.

Book Lecture: Kathleen Osberger

Loyola welcomes Kathleen Osberger for a talk on her recently published memoir, I Surrender: A Memoir of Chile's Dictatorship, 1975. I Surrender depicts the solidarity of the Chilean people and the transformational role of nuns and priests dedicated to serving the poor, while highlighting the changing and challenged Catholic church.

The Society for Phenomenology and Existential Philosophy conference has a paper submission deadline of January 20th. SPEP is the biggest conference for continental philosophers to present and network. As such, publishing for SPEP is a near professional expectation.
Dr. Jesús Luzardo is hosting a Zoom session for graduate students on Friday, December 8 from 3:00pm to 4:30pm to workshop papers and receive tips on potential submissions. He will talk about the submission process, and what a SPEP paper looks like. He will also talk about conferences and networking more generally.

On Thursday, October 19 Loyola will host Dr. Marco Impagliazzo, the President of the Community of Sant'Egidio, for a conversation on religions for peace. The event will take place at Ignatius House at 7:00pm. Sant'Egidio is not only a wonderful community of friends, but also an increasingly important player in international peacemaking.
This event is free and open to the public and all are welcome to attend.

Each year two Philosophy faculty members engage in a spirited debate on a variety of topics. This year we will have a debate on "Confucius vs. Jean-Paul Sartre on the Meaning of Life", presented by Dr. Richard Kim and Dr. Dimitris Apostolopoulos. The debate is on Wednesday, September 27 from 6:30pm to 8:00pm and the location has changed to Simpson MPR. There will be free pizza and all are welcome!

Our Graduate Placement Committee is hosting a workshop on how to apply to PhD programs in Philosophy. This workshop will take place Thursday, September 28 from 4:00pm to 5:30pm in Crown 105. It is mostly geared towards students in our MA program, but anyone who is seriously thinking about going to graduate school in Philosophy should come! Dr. Apostolopoulos will discuss key materials you will need to submit, the timelines for applying, and good practices for preparing strong applications.
