Applied Social Psychology PhD

Prospective PhD Students

Welcome prospective PhD students! Thank you for your interest in our Applied Social Psychology PhD program. This page provides you with the basic degree requirements for the program, application requirements for our PhD program, and the graduate school application requirements for international students.

We admit 3 students to our social psychology PhD program each fall semester. Students admitted to the PhD program are provided with 5 years of funding (9-month graduate assistantship stipend plus tuition remission).

Below are the degree requirements for the program:

  • Coursework (20 courses)
  • Master's thesis, Internship, Candidacy Exam and Dissertation
  • Responsible Conduct of Research and Scholarship (RCRS) training offered by the Office of Research Services

 

Application Process

To apply to the Applied Social Psychology program, please submit your application materials at https://gpem.luc.edu/apply/. There is no application fee for applying to our program.

 

Application Deadline

We admit students to start during the Fall semester only. Please keep in mind that both the application and the required materials must be submitted by the specified deadline.

                       

Fall Deadline: December 15th 5:00 pm CST

Please note that applications are not reviewed until the deadline passes.

 

Application Requirements

Application requirements for the Applied Social Psychology PhD program include:

  • Current Resume/CV
  • Statement of Purpose
  • Writing Sample (APA research paper)
  • Official Transcripts from all institutions attended
  • 3 Letters of Recommendation

 

CURRENT RESUME/CV DETAILS

Please submit a current resume/CV as part of your application. Your resume/CV should provide information about schools attended and degrees received, awards or fellowships received, research experience (labs worked in and skills learned), conference presentations and publications, and leadership and service activities (especially those related to social justice).

 

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE DETAILS

Please write a statement (no more than 2 pages) describing your academic and research interests (and how you became interested in the topic), your previous research experience (describe projects you worked on and skills you acquired), and your professional goals. Please also make sure to mention 2 of the social area faculty members you would like to work with who are a good fit for your research interests.

 

WRITING SAMPLE DETAILS

Please submit a research paper in APA style based on research you conducted or a theoretical paper from a class.

 

OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT DETAILS

Applicants must submit official transcripts from all institutions attended. Official transcripts are those that are sent directly by the college/university to Loyola University Chicago. Transcripts (with U.S. educational credentials) sent by the student to Loyola are considered unofficial documents, and while they may be utilized for initial review of your application, official transcripts are still required. Official documents should be sent by the institution to gradapp@luc.edu.

 

LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION DETAILS

Please submit 3 letters of recommendation from faculty or supervisors who know you well. Please prioritize letters from writers who can speak to your research experience and/or academic potential if possible.

 

International Applicant Requirements

An official English language proficiency exam is required for international applicants whose native language is not English. If you have non-U.S. educational credentials, you are required to submit an official transcript evaluation. The transcript evaluation cannot be waived, and unofficial transcripts will not be accepted for international applicants.
