First-Year Experience

Rome Start Global Scholars

Begin in Rome, continue in Chicago, and go global

Interested in expanding your horizons and making a difference in a global context? Want to have a first-year experience like no other?

The Rome Start Global Scholars program (abbreviated as Rome Start) gives first-year LUC students the opportunity to begin their university journey in Rome for a full academic year, acquiring the skills to become agents of social change as part of a select community that merges learning and action!

Drawing from its international crossroads location by the Mediterranean and informed by LUC Ignatian principles, the program is animated by two core values: global awareness and the common good. By growing in global awareness, you can better understand the needs, perspectives, and systems at play in today’s world. By focusing on the common good, you can support and create those conditions that enable people to thrive, both individually and communally.

As part of the program, Rome Start Global Scholars have the opportunity to engage in a variety of community activities, events and trips, which have included:

  • Visiting the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)
  • Small group work at Save the Children Italia
  • Cooking class at the local ethically based business Hummustown
  • Awareness activity at the Joel Nafuma Refugee Center
  • Fall Ignatian Day of Reflection trip
  • Spring end-of-the-year weekend trip
  • Community movie nights

Course-wise, first-year students will be able to complete much of the required LUC core curriculum while in Rome. For successful program completion, students need to pass two seminar courses designed specifically for them  (UNIV 101 in the fall and UNIV 102 in the spring) and participate in required fall and spring community activities.

Upon successful completion of the program, students will receive a Rome Start Global Scholars certificate, which formally recognizes their preparation, ability, and dedication to be positive change-makers in today's international landscape.
