Unmasking Neurodiversity: Autistic Identity, Disability, and Self-Advocacy

Virtual

In this talk, Devon Price, PhD, clinical associate professor and author of Unmasking Autism and Unmasking for Life, will dispel pervasive myths about what Autism is and promote an understanding of neurodiversity rooted in individuals; identities, experiences of disability, and shared organizing power. The erasure of marginalized Autistics and the rise of Autistic self-identity will also be explored, and contextualized. Attendees will walk away from this talk with a firmer understanding of how Autism affects every aspect of a disabled person's life, how the state of disability is created by social exclusion and lack of accommodation, and will be given best-practices for building neurodiversity-affirming schools, workplaces, and community events. The challenges that the Autistic self-advocacy community faces in our current political landscape will also be discussed.
