A Journey in Review
Brother-and-sister duo Zaia and Caroline Zaia (BA, Paralegal Studies ‘17), recently met with SCPS to discuss their professional journeys post-graduation as well as provide some key tips and insight for future adult learners! Caroline, having returned to school after completing an associate's degree in paralegal studies at Oakton Community College, was driven to apply to SCPS’s Institute for Paralegal Studies to finish what she had started years prior – a decision that inspired Zaia to do the same. Both Caroline and Zaia commend SCPS for standing out due its flexible transfer credit policies, personalized support, and the strong reputation of a Loyola degree.
As adult learners juggling full-time careers, Caroline and Zaia found SCPS’ flexible scheduling and accelerated course formats especially valuable. Caroline appreciated the ability to take four courses per semester by tackling two classes every eight weeks—an intensive workload she managed while working full-time and commuting to class.
Zaia echoed the importance of structure, treating school as a second job and strategically blocking off time for study.
“Saturdays were a huge one for me,” Zaia states. “I would get up early in the morning and try to get as much as I could done, and that way I would feel that sense of freedom right after that. You must treat it like another job, and that might sound daunting but the benefit of thinking about it that way is you give it the priority and the focus that it deserves.”
Their determination was matched by camaraderie: long commutes together became mobile study sessions, and they formed tight bonds with peers navigating similar challenges. Their advice to prospective students? Make the leap, ask questions, lean into the support system, and apply for every scholarship possible.
Since completing their degrees, both alumni have advanced significantly in their careers. Caroline now serves as an Area Manager at DHI Title Insurance Company where her SCPS education has been instrumental in interpreting real estate regulations across multiple states.
“The degree helped me learn how to read and interpret law,” Caroline states. “And in my area right now, I must be able to read regulations, state rules, federal rules since we are considered a financial institution. The degree helps me look at law every day.”
Zaia, meanwhile, has risen to the role of Staff Training Manager at a prominent law firm, where he oversees onboarding and training programs firm wide. His ability to curate accessible, collaborative training resources is a direct reflection of the practical and applied learning he experienced at Loyola.
Reflecting on their journeys, Caroline and Zaia agree that the investment of time, energy, and resources into returning to school was worth every sacrifice.
“Are there sacrifices that you make? Yes,” Caroline affirms. “But, when you're done, it's worth it. You’ll have your degree, and it is the reason why I am in the position I am today. If you're hardworking and passionate, you will find yourself in a position years down the line where the cost will have been worth it for you.”
