Department Honors & Awards
Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD) – International Sociology Honor Society
Loyola University Chicago’s Department of Sociology established its chapter of Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD), the International Sociology Honor Society, in 1928.
Membership is open to students who:
- Are at least juniors
- Have a minimum 3.4 overall GPA
- Have a 3.6 GPA in Sociology
- Have completed five or more Sociology courses
AKD recognizes students who demonstrate academic excellence in both the Sociology major and the university as a whole. Inducted students join a distinguished network of sociology scholars at Loyola and around the world.
Each new member receives:
- A lifetime membership certificate
- A one-year subscription to Sociological Inquiry
Graduating members are awarded AKD honor cords to wear at commencement.
Each year in early April, eligible students are invited to join AKD. Induction takes place at the Department of Sociology’s annual awards reception in late April.

Honors in Sociology or Sociology/Anthropology
Students majoring in Sociology or Sociology/Anthropology may graduate with honors in the major. This option is available to both Honors Program students and those outside of the program, and is especially beneficial for students considering graduate or professional school.
To earn honors, students must:
- Achieve a minimum 3.4 GPA overall and in the major, and
- Complete one of the following:
- Write a satisfactory Honors Thesis under faculty supervision in SOCL 365: Social Theory & Social Research, or
- Complete two graduate-level Sociology courses (counting toward the undergraduate major) with a grade of B or better
Enrollment in graduate courses requires approval from both the course instructor and the Graduate Program Director.
Students interested in pursuing honors should complete the required form and consult with the Undergraduate Program Director.
