The Loyola University Chicago community mourns the death of Suresh Unni, PhD, MSW, LCSW, (BA ‘04), part-time faculty member in the School of Social Work, who passed away on April 2, 2025.
Unni was a beloved husband, father, colleague, professor, and friend. He earned his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees from Loyola before joining the School of Social Work as a part-time adjunct professor. His students knew him for his great sense of humor and creative lessons. His family said his favorite thing about teaching was making his students laugh. He also operated a private practice focused on mental health counseling. In addition, Unni offered his professional expertise in suicide prevention, particularly at schools with at-risk students.
His wife and daughter will remember him for his dad jokes, passion for social justice, and genuine curiosity for others’ well-being. He was a great listener and nothing matched his love and devotion for his family.
Services were held on April 5 at Burns Funeral Home in his hometown of Crown Point, IN.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to one of the following organizations in Suresh Unni's name: American Foundation For Suicide Prevention AFSP.org, JED Foundation jedfoundation.org, 988 Life Line 988LifeLine.org. An obituary for Unni can be found here.
Please keep Dr. Unni, his family and friends, and all of the lives he touched in your thoughts and prayers.
