The Loyola University Chicago community mourns the loss of Sheldon S. Cohen, professor emeritus of History and author, who died on February 24, 2026 at the age of 94.

Cohen taught at Loyola from 1969 until 2003. He published numerous books and articles, mostly about the American Revolution and its aftermath.

Cohen was a beloved, welcoming, and gentle colleague and an avid fan of college sports and especially the Loyola Ramblers. He cared and thought deeply about issues of justice, equality, inclusion, and took seriously the idealism embedded in the nation's founding, all of which he brought to his students.
