Policy on Visa Support
The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) sponsors and pays the regular application and legal fees for the H-1B visa for full-time faculty on multiyear contracts (i.e., faculty on the tenure-track and non-tenure-track Lecturers on multiyear 85 lines) but not for part-time faculty or full-time non-tenure-track Instructors on one-year 88-lines. (All following references to “faculty” refer to “full-time faculty on multiyear contracts.”) After the signing of the initial contract with the new faculty member, it may be necessary for CAS to pay premium processing fees to enable the faculty member to begin teaching at Loyola University Chicago. CAS also sponsors the spouse and children of the faculty hire to obtain H-4 visas for the spouse and children, paying for the legal fees but not the application fees for a spousal H-4 visa. CAS subsequently pays for the application and legal fees for the Permanent Residency (PERM EB-2) or “green card” process for the faculty hire. CAS only pays regular processing fees for the PERM EB-2/green card process (i.e., it does not pay for expedited applications for the PERM EB-2/green card/process, nor does it pay for other processes, such as the EB-1). CAS sponsoring and payment for the H-1B visa and PERM EB-2/green card processes constitute an important benefit for faculty, in that many universities either do not cover the visa fees or require the faculty member to cover a portion of those fees, which are substantial.
