Stewardship Institute

Comprehensive education for anyone in the family system

Generational succession in family businesses demands a unique understanding of how family and business dynamics intertwine—insight that is often missing in non-family enterprises. Without it, the family’s legacy can be at risk.

The Stewardship Institute is a fully in-person program designed to provide comprehensive education in family business best practices. It’s open to family members across the enterprise—whether they work in the business, are married into the family, or are next-generation owners not directly involved.

A defining strength of the Institute is the in-person experience: or small cohorts meet face-to-face to foster candid dialogue, deep connection, and shared learning. By gathering family business peers in the same room, the Institute creates a dynamic, interactive environment that simply can’t be replicated virtually. Participants are welcome to join as individuals or with family members.

Additional Information

Designed for

The institute is ideal for family members who want to be impactful and responsible stewards of their family business. Whether working in the business, a direct descendant, or an in-law the institute will expand your knowledge of family business best practices.

Participants should strongly value the legacy of their family business, want to be responsible stewards, and want to understand what’s different when taking on a family lens in business.

Meeting Dates

The Stewardship Institute meets 6 times for one and one-half days over the course of 18 months. Meetings take place in-person (this is not a virtual program) on Loyola's Water Tower Campus at the Schreiber Center, located at 16 E. Pearson Street in Chicago.

Meeting dates are typically determined by cohort participants during the institute kick-off.

Program Benefits

No other program out there offers this level of family business education. Thought leaders, subject matter experts, and live case studies, along with confidential peer-to-peer learning, are all here to help you develop a set of tools and resources to foster responsible and effective stewardship.

Outside of meetings, you’re encouraged to take what you’ve learned back to your family business, see what impact it has, and report back to your peers on your challenges and successes.

But I already have an MBA...

Don’t get us wrong, MBAs are incredibly valuable. But what sets the Stewardship Institute apart from an MBA is the family business lens through which content is delivered. This perspective isn’t something you typically receive in standard academics.

For example, can you answer the following questions?

  1. What is the three circle model?
  2. What challenges do cousins face that are different from the challenges siblings confront in family business transitions?
  3. What are the three leading best practices for family businesses?

If you can answer these questions, then the Stewardship Institute probably isn’t for you. But if you cannot answer them and you’re passionate about being a responsible steward of your family business, we encourage you to enroll in this one-of-a-kind program!
