Mallinckrodt Scholars Program - A New Venture

Text by Sr. Mary Clement Eiden, SCCC

Each Sister today is challenged to keep our heritage ahve and vibrant for generations to come.  (SCC Region Chapter Document, 2012)  The above challenge is being taken up in a new and exciting way! Work is being done to establish the Mallinckrodt Scholars Program through the Gannon Center for Women and Leadership at Loyola University Chicago. The idea for such a program was brought to the Sisters of Christian Charity by Marge Noterman Beane and Julie Kuzera . Their goal is to establish an endowment fund to .permanently sustain the program (MSP) as a way of keeping Mother Pauline's heritage alive at Loyola University with which the SCCs have had connections over the years.

The idea took root after the regional leadership team, Marge and Julie met with Janet Sisler,
the Director of the Gannon Center in mid-February, 2013 . Jan explained the existing Gannon Scholars Program and magnanimously offered to take the new program under the wings of the Gannon Center. Marge, Julie, Jan and Sr. Mary Clement Eiden eventually became the core group that would spearhead the project .

The core group has met several times to compile lists of possible donors and to consider logistics. Loyola's Advancement and Development Team (through Kurt Peterson) has been  most helpful. It is quite amazing that the first solicitation letter went out on August 19.

This letter was sent to those connected with the Sisters fom "convent days". A second mailing went out in October to those associated with Mallinckrodt College: trustees, board members, faculty, alums.  The following mission statement was drafted to explain the Mallinckrodt Scholars Program to those who might wish to invest in this venture.

The Mallinckrodt Scholars Program is a progressive program for undergraduates at Loyola University Chicago. It is hoped that the MSP will receive enough funding to begin offering scholarships for the 2015-16 academic year. For more infonnation, contact Sr. Mary Clement at 847-920-9341 or at sccmaryclement@hotmail.com
