Breeding Services:
Rodent breeding colonies are managed by trained and experienced personnel and include mating (in consultation with investigator), weaning, record keeping, sampling for DNA analysis (as determined by the investigator), identification of animals, analysis of breeding problems (e.g. related to genotype), and euthanasia of retired breeders and unwanted animals (as determined by DNA analysis). Breeding colonies are housed in designated animal rooms without investigator access. The investigator receives weekly reports that include breeding performance, number of litters born, number of animals weaned, and the number and age of stock animals available for experiments. Animals for experiments are relocated to the investigator’s experimental animal housing room.
Pricing:
All aspects of this service will be charged on an actual time basis. Technician time is currently $ 28.00 per hour. Breeding colonies differ widely due to genetic differences (breeding systems, reproductive performance, etc.) and due to research requirements.

Quarantine:
Rodent imports from non-commercial sources and unproven, commercial vendors must be prescreened for quarantine. Animals from facilities that do not pass the prescreening process must be rederived prior to arrival at Loyola. Animals rederived at an approved, commercial vendor are accepted directly into Loyola’s barrier rooms, animals from all other vendors and facilities must undergo quarantine (even if rederived), once approved for shipment.
Accepted animal imports must undergo a minimum 30-day quarantine/conditioning period before they can be housed in non-quarantine space. There may be a wait list for quarantine. During quarantine, animals are monitored for evidence of disease through visual inspection and laboratory tests.
Quarantine Import Evaluation Charge (includes facility evaluation and communication for all import requests): $160
Quarantine Animal Procurement and In-Processing (includes PO creation and animal receipt): $38
Quarantine Monitoring (includes standard QN start and end testing, sample collection, and sample shipment): $1400
Quarantine Animal Shipping (if not included in vendor or institution’s charges): cost varies widely depending on distance and is charged at the time of quarantine or when the invoice is received from the shipping company.
Extended Animal Quarantine (includes a daily fee for use of the room, in addition to regular per diems, charge is initiated one week after animals have been released from quarantine, either for export to a commercial vendor or to the CMF housing rooms, only if relocation has not been started): $80 per day
During quarantine, any necessary retesting, treatment, breeding assistance, other technical assistance, and vendor or supply increases not covered by the blanket charges, are extra.
From order to release from quarantine can take several months, so if time is a factor, this should be taken into account. Positive diagnostic tests for excluded agents during quarantine usually require prompt export for rederivation at an, approved, commercial vendor.
Animal Export Arrangement: For sending animals to other institutions or vendors for collaboration, cryopreservation, or rederivation: $80
Animal Export Crating (includes crate preparation, labelling, securing, and hand-off to carrier, PI must put animals in crate): $35 per crate
Animal Export Shipping: (if not paid for by vendor or receiving institution): cost varies widely depending on distance and is charged at the time of invoicing by shipping company.
