Navigating Large Language Models: Foundations and Frameworks

This introductory presentation provides a roadmap for navigating the Large Language Model (LLM) landscape. We will start by covering the basic mechanics of how these models function, along with the various ways to access and interact with this technology from commercial platforms to local institutional deployment. We will then take a brief look into the LLM Toolbox, comparing optimization methods such as prompt engineering, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), Agents, and fine-tuning to help researchers identify the best approach for their specific workflows.

Speaker About Topic Date More Information

Peter Norlander is an Associate Professor of Management at Loyola University Chicago’s Quinlan School of Business. His research focuses on contemporary economic and workplace issues, often using large administrative datasets, working with students, and engaging with professional, business, and non-profit communities to address collective action problems in the field.

Svetlozar Nestorov is an associate professor of Information Systems at Loyola University Chicago’s Quinlan School of Business. His research interests include databases, data mining, artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, web technologies, and education.

Stephen Meisenbacher is a research associate at the chair for Software Engineering of Business Information Systems at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and is pursuing his PhD, which focuses on advancing Differential Privacy in the context of Natural Language Processing.

Online job postings contain real-time information on employer demand and working conditions needed by many data users, but access has been limited due to proprietary methods and data. Based on work extracting billions of structured data points from the unstructured text of over 155 million job postings covering 2015-2025, this talk will describe the construction of and applications for what will be the first large scale public use aggregated dataset of job ad features when released.

NOVEMBER 11, 2025 Recording

Michael Saban is a PhD student in Computer Science at Loyola University Chicago and a Graduate Research Assistant in the Department of Health Informatics and Data Science.

Daniel Heiferman, MD is a cerebrovascular neurosurgeon at Endeavor Health with a research program centered on advancing stroke care.

Paula de la Pena, PhD RN is a neurocritical care nurse with specialized expertise in stroke care and a current TL1 Postdoctoral Fellow in the Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing.

Samie Tootooni, PhD is Assistant Professor in the department of Health Informatics and Data Science and Associate Director of the CHOIR.

Translating artificial intelligence (AI) into clinical practice remains a major challenge, even for high-priority areas such as stroke detection. StrokePath is an early-stage decision support tool that uses routine Emergency Medical Systems (EMS) data to assist providers in stroke triage, designed to enhance clinical judgment while fitting existing workflows.

This presentation will share our dual focus (1) developing and validating predictive models, and (2) conducting early implementation studies with stakeholder engagement and workflow integration, to ensure StrokePath evolves as a practical, real-world tool. The approach may also inform the translation of other AI-based clinical decision support systems.

OCTOBER 14, 2025 Recording

Ron Price is the Associate Vice President, Research and Analytic Services at Loyola University Chicago, Information Technology Services. Mr. Price’s responsibilities include direction of technology teams that identify, implement and support computing and analytics initiatives that advance the institutions’ strategic goals.

The Clinical Research Database (CRDB): Epic Data Mining for Research & Data Security

The CRDB is a large-scale, longitudinal clinical data repository that is utilized to support clinical research. It is composed of a limited data set (LDS) containing 18 years (2007 – 2023) of longitudinal data on more than two million patients. It has a supporting web-based application that allows LUC faculty, students and staff to preform “preparatory-to-research” queries in a “self-serve” manner.

Designing Technology for Low Literacy Individuals: Understanding Users Before, During, and After the Interaction

This talk describes the design considerations before a feasibility study, during the study, and contrasts two interactions with an intelligent tutoring system aimed at low literacy Latinas in the United States, where the experiment and subsequent evaluation call for a more nuanced approach at the evaluation of interactions between these systems and low literacy individuals.
