Major and Minor Programs
All the undergraduate degree programs offered by the Theology Department are designed to provide students with resources for the analysis of religion; for investigation of the sources, historical development and contemporary practices of particular religious traditions, and for the critical appropriation of these traditions for one's personal faith and for sympathetic appreciation of the beliefs of others.
Students who major in theology and religious studies may go on to pursue careers or graduate work directly related to their majors. Others will achieve a religious literacy from their coursework that will enable them to apply the knowledge gained to other areas of study, such as:
- Health Care
- Political science and global studies
- Education
- Journalism
- Social Work
- Corporate Ethics
- Mission Advancement
Major in Theology or Religious Studies
The majors offer three distinct tracks that students may undertake – the standard track, an interdisciplinary track, or an honors track.
Honors Track
- The same 12 course requirement as the standard major, but 7 of the courses must be 300-level or above
- At least a 3.5 GPA in the major and in overall coursework is required
Interdisciplinary Track
This is beneficial for double majors, because for this track:
- 2 of the 5 electives must be in a different field of study (i.e. your other major!)
- the capstone research project (280E) is an integration of your two disciplines!
- The 6 pre-set theology courses are still required (3 of these are core courses)
Standard Track
- 12 courses in Theology (Theology BA) or 12 courses in Religious Studies (Religious Studies BA)
- 6 pre-set required courses, 5 electives, 1 Capstone Class
- 5 of these courses should be 300-level or above
Minor in Theology or Religious Studies
- 6 courses in Theology (Theology Minor) or 6 courses in Religious Studies (Religious Studies Minor)
- 3 core courses (already required), 3 electives (300-level)
- A Religious Studies minor requires you study at least 2 major world religions
Some of the favorite courses of our majors and minors from the last few years:
- "Nature and Spirituality"
- "History of Christian Thought"
