On October 16, 2025, Loyola University Chicago School of Education proudly hosted its annual Distinguished Alumni Awards. This special evening was dedicated to celebrating the accomplishments of graduates who have made profound impacts in their fields and continue to embody Loyola's values in their work. With a strong tradition of recognizing excellence, the School of Education honors alumni who are not only advancing educational practices but also driving meaningful change in addressing social inequalities locally, nationally, and globally.

The 2025 Distinguished Alumni Award Recipients represent a diverse group of professionals whose work spans across educational psychology, research, counseling, administration, and policy. Their dedication to service, equity, and leadership highlights the transformative power of education to shape communities and uplift others. The Research Methodology Distinguished Alumni Award

Wenya Chen, PhD

Dr. Wenya Chen, PhD, ‘24, a graduate of Research Methodology with a focus on Measurement & Applied Statistics, is the lead statistician at Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. She offers expert statistical support for pediatric research projects, mentors new statisticians, and encourages collaboration across disciplines. Her work helps improve healthcare through strong research methods and shows her commitment to innovation, mentorship, and better health outcomes.

Eric Twadell, PhD
The Educational Leadership Distinguished Alumni Award

Eric Twadell, PhD

Dr. Eric Twadell, PhD ‘02, MEd ’98, a graduate of the Educational Leadership and Policy Studies and Curriculum and Instruction programs, is a respected superintendent, thought leader, and advocate for student-focused school reform. As Superintendent of Adlai E. Stevenson High School District 125, he has led one of the country’s top public school districts for almost 20 years, introducing new approaches in professional learning, grading, and student wellness. Dr. Twadell is also a published author and international consultant. His dedication to equity, innovation, and leadership development shows the Jesuit values of educational excellence and service to others, making him an outstanding Loyola alumnus.

The Counseling Psychology Distinguished Alumni Award

Richard Q. Shin, PhD

Dr. Richard Q. Shin, PhD. ‘05, a graduate of the Counseling Psychology program, is an associate professor and program director at the University of Maryland, College Park. His research addresses systemic discrimination in mental health, such as racism, sexism, and heterosexism. As a social justice scholar, Dr. Shin serves on editorial boards and has led important studies on intersectionality in counseling psychology, working to advance equity through his teaching, research, and advocacy.

The Terry E. Williams Higher Education Distinguished Alumni Award

Megan Segoshi, PhD

Dr. Megan S. Segoshi, PhD ‘17, a graduate of the Higher Education program, is a nationally recognized leader in promoting equity and inclusion in higher education. As Director of Diversity & Inclusion at Boston University, she works to improve campus climate, support inclusive teaching, and increase faculty diversity. With a background in social work and institutional effectiveness, Dr. Segoshi combines research and practice to remove barriers and create fair learning opportunities. Her dedication to building community, encouraging critical thinking, and supporting systemic change reflects the Jesuit values of justice and transformative education that are important to Loyola alumni.

The School Psychology Distinguished Alumni Award

Breeda McGrath, PhD

Dr. Breeda McGrath, PhD ‘02, MEd ‘98, a double major graduate in School Psychology, is a respected leader in higher education, a licensed clinical psychologist, and an advocate for children worldwide. She is currently President of Pacific Oaks College & Children’s School. With more than 20 years of experience in academic affairs, global mental health, and immigrant rights, Dr. McGrath’s work covers clinical, educational, and policy areas. She is known for her strong commitment to justice, ethical leadership, and global engagement, which are key Jesuit values and mark her as a distinguished Loyola alumna.

The Teaching & Learning Distinguished Alumni Award

Micah Zaker, BSEd, MA

Micah Zaker, MS ‘22, BS ‘18, is an award-winning educator, department chair, and curriculum designer who focuses on environmental science, equity, and inclusive teaching. Zaker teaches AP and honors science at MacArthur High School in Washington, D.C. and leads both the science department and the new teacher mentoring program. As a former Golden Apple Scholar and double alumnus, Zaker brings a justice-centered approach to science education and has contributed to national discussions on LGBTQIA+ inclusion, inquiry-based learning, and environmental literacy. These efforts reflect the Jesuit values of leadership, service, and educational excellence.
