As an international student, do I need to fill out a U.S. income return?
If you received compensation as an employee, fellowship, room/board award, or other prize income during the calendar year 2025, you must file a federal income tax return, Form 1040. Nonresident students with income will file a Form 1040-NR.
All international students must file Form 8843 even if they did not work or receive taxable income during calendar year 2025.
What is the difference between Sprintax Calculus versus Sprintax Returns?

All international students who are student workers or receive a payment noted above will have a Sprintax Calculus account. Loyola uses Sprintax to ensure that you are taxed correctly and prepare the relevant tax documents for you. You will receive an activation email with a link to activate your account & provide your details upon hire or notification of award. |

Sprintax Returns – tax preparation software

All nonresidents in the U.S. need to file a tax return annually. Sprintax Returns will prepare your Federal and State tax returns. Earned income: Form 1040-NR + Form 8843 No earned income: Form 8843 |
Do I need to access Sprintax Calculus again if I already filled out my profile last year?
YES! Your Sprintax Calculus profile needs to be reviewed and updated annually. Please review your personal and immigration information and make any updates as needed. The Tax summary report must be signed each year.
Will Sprintax Returns assist me with filing all my required income tax filings?
Yes, Sprintax Returns will assist you with filing your Form 8843 and Form 1040-NR. Applicable state income returns are available for an additional fee.

Who can assist me with my income tax return questions?
The International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) office has teamed up with Sprintax to offer you Sprintax Returns (tax preparation software) at no cost to file your federal income tax return. Please email isss@luc.edu to obtain the 2025 discount code. You can only use Sprintax Returns if you are considered a nonresident alien for tax purposes. If you are uncertain of your tax status, please review your Sprintax Calculus account, the tax summary report will provide you your tax status.
University Tax and ISSS Staff are not able to provide advice or answer questions regarding your tax returns.
Did the Sprintax/Loyola University Chicago Tax Webinar already occur?
Sprintax and Loyola University Chicago will hold a Nonresident Tax webinar in early 2026. This webinar will review your tax filing obligations, where you can access your Loyola issued tax forms, filing due dates, and a Sprintax Calculus and Sprintax Returns overview among other items. It is highly recommended that all international students/scholars review the webinar as many of your questions are likely answered.
What should I do if I forgot my Sprintax password?
You can reset your password by clicking the “Forgot your password?” link in the log-in area. Sprintax will send you a password reset email to the email address used for account creation, ensure you are using the correct email address used to set up your Sprintax account. If you don't see a password reset email in your inbox, be sure to check your junk/spam folder.
