Celebrating the Life of Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt, BVM
Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt, BVM, was born into eternal life on October 9, 2025, after joyfully celebrating her 106th birthday on August 21, 2025.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Madonna della Strada Chapel, with a prayer service at approximately 5 or 6 p.m. Funeral services will follow on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at 10 a.m., also at the Madonna della Strada Chapel.
For more than 60 years, Sister Jean Dolores was a beloved part of the Mundelein College and Gannon Center communities. As Associate Academic Dean and a faculty member in the Education Department, she profoundly shaped the lives of hundreds of Mundelein students during pivotal years of their education and growth. After Mundelein affiliated with Loyola University Chicago in 1991, Sister Jean continued her ministry as Chaplain to the Men’s Basketball Team, extending her wisdom, warmth, and humor to generations of Loyola students and athletes.
Affectionately known as “Jean the Dean,” she was a steady, compassionate presence—always ready to listen and to offer advice on matters large and small. Mundelein alumna Mary Ann O’Rourke recalls one of her favorite Sister Jean sayings, a nod to both basketball and life: “If the arc is true, the ball goes in.”
Sister Jean Dolores helped so many of us find our own arcs, and we owe her more than words can say. We trust she’s continuing her recruiting work from heaven—cheering us on, as always.
