Scholarships

A scholarship is a form of gift assistance that does not need to be repaid. Loyola awards need-based and merit scholarships on a competitive basis. The following academic scholarship opportunities are available through the School of Environmental Sustainability.

Rachel Carson Scholarship Program

The Rachel Carson Scholars Program provides financial support for students to participate in nature and ecology-focused courses and programs at the Loyola University Retreat and Ecology Campus (LUREC). Located roughly 60 miles northwest of Chicago, LUREC offers 98 acres of prairies, woodlands, and wetlands, along with dormitory-style accommodations, a cafeteria, and classroom and lab spaces. During the annual “Maymester” session, students live and study at the campus, completing the equivalent of one semester-long course in just three weeks. In addition to coursework, SES hosts weekend workshops and retreats at LUREC and partners with the Restoration Club to support volunteer days at the site.

The Rachel Carson Program provides:

  • Full tuition, room, and board for two May session courses at LUREC.
  • Free attendance at LUREC Workshop Weekends or retreats hosted by SES.
  • Special events just for Rachel Carson Scholars, fostering connections among students who share a love of nature.

Students majoring in environmental science (BS, all concentrations), environmental studies, environmental policy, or environmental economics and sustainability are eligible to apply for the Rachel Carson Scholars Program, and up to four new first-year students will be selected for the program each year. Completion of two courses at LUREC over the course of two years is a condition of accepting this award. To learn more, contact admissions at admissions@luc.edu.
