FlowPaper
How Loyola University Chicago converts certain PDFs into a more accessible, web-friendly format.
What is FlowPaper?
FlowPaper is the format Loyola uses to display certain remediated PDFs in a more accessible, web-friendly way.
Instead of requiring users to download a traditional PDF file, FlowPaper converts approved PDFs into structured HTML content that is easier to read, navigate, and use with assistive technology.
When FlowPaper is used, your document:
- opens directly in the browser.
- works better with screen readers.
- is easier to navigate across devices.
- does not require a file download.
When is FlowPaper used?
FlowPaper may be used when:
- a PDF format must be preserved.
- the content is primarily intended for on-screen reading.
- converting the document into a full web page is not appropriate.
- the document qualifies for remediation review.
Not all PDFs are eligible for FlowPaper conversion. Each submission is evaluated individually.
At Loyola University Chicago, PDF remediation is handled by the Digital Team using a consistent review and conversion process.
What to expect
- Submit a Request
Campus partners submit their PDF using the PDF Remediation Request Form. - Review
The Digital Team evaluates the file to determine:- whether it qualifies for remediation.
- whether a web page would be a better solution.
- whether an alternative format is recommended.
- Conversion (if approved)
If the document qualifies, it is converted using FlowPaper into accessible HTML elements. Once the conversion is complete, you will receive a URL that:- links to the accessible version of your original PDF
- can be used as an external link on your webpages
- may replace traditional "Download PDF" links
Response Timeline
A member of the Digital Team will follow up within 3–5 business days with next steps, questions, or confirmation. Complex documents may require additional time.

Important Note
FlowPaper improves accessibility and usability, but it does not replace the need for strong content design. Documents should still use clear structure, avoid unnecessary complexity, be appropriate for web publication, and follow University brand and editorial guidelines.
