The suitcase is back on my bed, but it’s no longer a "gaping, empty mouth." It’s heavy and not just with souvenirs or the extra layer of California clothes, but with the weight of a dozen new perspectives. Stepping off the plane and back into the Windy City, the air feels sharper, more familiar, and yet I feel fundamentally different. I’m looking at the same skyline, but through a lens that’s been changed by the West Coast sun and the incredible people I met along the way.
Meeting with alumni and local professionals was easily the most life-changing part of this journey. There is something so grounding and yet so uplifting about sitting across from people who were once in my shoes and seeing where their paths have carved through the world. I didn't just attend meetings; I stepped into stories. If I could answer my past self: Yes, I stayed open. California wasn't just a destination; it was a gate in the power of staying connected. Many alumni had stayed in touch with one another which was such powerful lesson when it comes to making meaningful connections
Lessons from the Coast
- Non-linear journeys that turned "failures" into foundations.
- Niche industries I hadn't even considered before this trip.
- The common thread of persistence that connects every successful professional, regardless of their zip code.
I felt extremely inspired by the openness of the West Coast community. I realized that the "what ifs" I was so nervous about are just invitations to grow.
A Note to My Current Self:
I stand here in Chicago today, already longing for that sense of connection, but I’m realizing that the "spark" doesn't have to fade just because the flight ended. I promised I wouldn't let the routine take over, and I’m keeping that promise. I’ve stayed in touch with the mentors and partners I met; in fact, I have a follow-up call in just a few minutes. The world feels even bigger today than it did when I left. California gave me a much bigger vision than what I originally planned. The Windy City is where I’ll do the work. But once I’m ready, I'll go to the city of angels for the next chapter.
