Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find a study abroad program?

  1. Go to abroad.luc.edu
  2. Click “Programs” in the upper left-hand corner.
  3. Search by country, term, region, and more.
  4. To learn program specifics, book a study abroad advising session via Navigate.

How can I prepare to study abroad in the future?

Step 1: Schedule a meeting with your academic advisor to determine the best term for you to go abroad and which degree requirements, if any, you need to fulfill abroad to stay on track to graduate.

Step 2: Meet with a Study Abroad Advisor to help you pick a program that aligns with your degree plan and interests.

Step 3: Apply!

Most Loyola study abroad programs accept students on a rolling basis. The earlier you apply, the better, as some programs have limited capacity.

When can I start a study abroad application?

Most spring, spring break, and J-term study abroad applications typically open in early July.*

Fall, academic year, and summer applications typically open in early December.*

Most programs are rolling admissions, so be sure to apply early!

*For Loyola’s Rome Center, please contact one of the Assistant Directors for Enrollment Management to learn more about when applications open.

How do I schedule an appointment with a Study Abroad Advisor?

You can schedule appointments with Study Abroad Advisors using the guidance below. Please note that in times of high demand (first 8 weeks of the semester), you may need to plan your appointment several weeks in advance.

Meet With the Study Abroad Office

We are here to connect you to advisors and the countries in which they specialize. Alternatively, you may search for a specific program, and then click on the “Meet with Advisor” button to access this information.

Schedule Via Navigate

Log into Navigate with your Loyola credentials. Select the advisor for the country (or countries) that you are interested in. Under “Service,” select the type of advising appointment that you are requesting. You can select from:

  • General Advising – select this if you do not have a particular program or region in mind, or if you have general questions about the study abroad process.
  • Program-Specific Advising – select this if you have a program and/or region you would like to discuss. Program specific advising appointments have regional designations (i.e. “Asia - Program-Specific Advising” or “Spain, Portugal, & Latin America - Program-Specific Advising”).
  • Faculty-Led Advising – select this if you would like to discuss a faculty-led program.
  • While Abroad/Returnee Advising – select this if you are already abroad or if you have returned from your study abroad program.

Finally, select a date, then click “Find Available Time.” The page of available dates and times for the selected advisor will be displayed. After choosing a date and time there will be an option to meet in person or virtually. There will also be an option to share more information—the more information you share in the meeting comment box, the more productive the meeting will be.

My GPA is lower than the required GPA listed in the program. Can I still be considered for the program?

You may still submit an application to study abroad, even if you do not meet the GPA requirement. GPA exceptions are reviewed on a case-by-case basis after consultation with the on-site study abroad program staff and your Loyola advisors. Please contact your study abroad advisor for more details.

I am a first-year student. Can I study abroad?

You can study abroad as a first-year student at Loyola on some of our faculty-led programs offered in January Term, Spring Break, and Summer. For all other programs, you need to have completed at least 12 credit hours at a higher education institution with at least a 2.5 GPA to apply to study abroad. For applications submitted before first term grades are published, you may receive a conditional admissions decision based on mid-term grades and an academic advisor recommendation.

For additional questions, please visit our apply to study abroad page.

Do I need my passport to apply to study abroad?

When applying for a study abroad program, you will need to provide one of the following two items:

  • Copy of a valid passport. Ensure your passport is signed and valid for at least six months beyond your program return date, or;
  • Proof of your passport application receipt.

To learn more please visit our apply to study abroad page.

Can I apply to multiple study abroad programs?

The maximum amount of programs a student can apply for during a term is 2. However, one of the applications has to be for the Rome Center. Students are only permitted to apply to one non-Rome program per term. Please carefully review the programs in advance so that you create an application for your top choice. If you wish to change the program reflected in your application, please contact your Study Abroad Advisor.

Students may create multiple applications spanning different terms. For example, a student could apply to study abroad in the summer and then again in the fall or spring. It is possible to study abroad more than once!

How long will it take to receive an admissions decision?

For most programs, students will receive an admissions decision via email within two weeks of the Study Abroad Office receiving all application materials. This includes the recommendation from the academic advisor or faculty leader. For some exchange programs, admissions decisions might not be made until at least two weeks after applications have closed. For specific questions, please contact one of our Study Abroad Advisors.

It has been more than two weeks since I submitted my application. Why have I not received an admissions decision?

If it has been more than two weeks and you have not received an admissions decision, it is possible that your application is still missing a component such as the advisor recommendation or the SRCR review. Delays can also occur if students have applied with an invalid passport or receipt. Kindly note that for students participating on exchange programs, admissions decisions may not be made within the typical two-week period. For any further questions, please contact your Study Abroad Advisor.

I need a home school authorization form. How can I obtain this?

Your Study Abroad Advisor will submit your home school authorization (HSA) digitally to the affiliate partner once you have been accepted by Loyola to study abroad. If you have not been accepted by Loyola yet, the Study Abroad Office is not able to submit your home school authorization.

How do I send my study abroad transcript to the Study Abroad Office?

Once your final grades have been posted from your study abroad program, request that your program send the Study Abroad Office your transcript. Transcripts can be sent by mail or electronically.

Why have my grades not been posted from my study abroad program?

Once the Study Abroad Office receives your transcript from your study abroad program, it can take 1-3 months to process and be articulated to LOCUS. If your grades have not been posted, it is possible Study Abroad Office never received your study abroad transcript, or that your academic advisor has not articulated your grades yet.
