Internships

An internship abroad is more than just a job. It is your opportunity to experience work cultures abroad, improve your foreign language skills, and build a global network that supports your professional growth and strengthens your resume.

Why should I intern abroad?

Interning abroad can provide you with many personal, academic, and professional advantages:

Academic

  • Earn credits toward your degree.
  • Develop a global, real-world perspective on your academic field.

Personal

  • Build self-confidence and resilience through successful navigation of a new city and its workplace.
  • Improve intercultural awareness, adaptability, and communication skills by working within a diverse global team.
  • Create lifelong memories and connections with people from different cultures.

Professional

  • Enhance your resume and gain a competitive edge in the job market.
  • Develop soft skills like leadership, time management, and accountability, through international workplace experience.
  • Grow your professional global network.

How can I intern abroad?

You can intern abroad as part of a standalone, full-time internship on an affiliate program. Alternatively, you can intern alongside your regular course load abroad on programs that offer internship features. This can be done with our affiliate and Jesuit affiliate partners or at the Rome Center.

Affiliate Internship Programs

Our affiliate partners guarantee customized internship placement and aim to give you a full and rewarding experience abroad. Internships in these programs are typically accompanied by a for-credit class.

Affiliate partners offering internship opportunities include:

  • SIT Study Abroad offers internships abroad with placements in nonprofit, private, and government sectors. These internships exist during the summer or as part of a semester-long study abroad program.
  • API Abroad offers internship opportunities in nearly all fields of study with the exception of clinical field work. There are full-time standalone internship opportunities as well as internship opportunities within a larger program of study.
  • IES Abroad offers standalone and co-curricular internships in a variety of fields and academic terms.

Jesuit Affiliate Internship Opportunities

Some semester or yearlong Jesuit affiliate programs offer internships alongside your academic coursework.

  • Fordham London offers optional internships in a variety of fields for spring and fall semester students with a minimum of a 3.3 GPA. For questions about Fordham London internships, contact Fordham directly after admission to the program.
  • SLU Madrid offers a limited number of internship placements for year-long students. For questions about SLU internships, contact SLU directly after admission to the program.
  • Marquette Sibanye Cape Town requires that students intern with a community-based partner organization two days a week as an integral part of the program curriculum. For questions about Marquette Sibanye Cape Town internships, contact Marquette directly after admission to the program.

Can I earn credit?

Yes, you can! However, to earn credit from your internship program abroad you MUST also enroll in an accompanying internship course. This course must include a syllabus. Please review the academic policies on internships to learn more.

Credit toward major, minor, Core, or Engaged Learning requirements are subject to the course approval process. Please review the academic policies surrounding course approvals to learn more.

As with other academic courses, the internship course will carry a letter grade unless there is a pass/no-pass request submitted and accepted for the course. Please review the academic policies surrounding pass/no-pass requests for additional information.

Will it be paid or unpaid?

Study abroad internships are NOT paid. In most cases, students are not legally able to earn income while they are abroad, unless they are a citizen of the country in which they are interning. Make sure that you consider this when planning your budget abroad.

How will I be placed?

The internship placement process may differ from program to program. You will work closely with the on-site partner to be placed in an internship that fits with your skills, language abilities, major, work experience, and interests. You may be asked to provide a resume or cover letter and interview for a specific role. It’s never too early to begin enhancing your job materials or practicing your interview skills.
