Re-entry Resources
Navigating Your Return
Coming back to Loyola after studying abroad may seem easy at first—but many students find that returning home involves unexpected challenges and personal growth. You’ve likely changed in big and small ways during your time abroad—emotionally, intellectually, and personally. It’s common to feel out of place, overwhelmed, or even disconnected. You might feel excited to be home, but also experience reverse culture shock, loneliness, or a sense of being “reverse homesick.”
Much like your initial adjustment to life abroad, re-entry is a process. Your relationships, routines, and surroundings might feel different now. You may even find yourself questioning parts of your own culture or lifestyle or wish to integrate your new cultural experience into your daily practices. This is completely normal—and an important part of your global learning journey.
Loyola Study Abroad and campus partners are here to support you as you reflect on your experience and continue to grow. The Study Abroad Office welcomes conversations with returnees about re-entry, future international opportunities, and how to stay globally engaged on campus.

Here are some suggestions to help you navigate the transition back home:
- Reconnect with Loyola’s global community. Spend time with international students or returnees—people who may understand what you’re experiencing.
- Reflect intentionally. Journaling, blogging, or creative projects can help you process your experience abroad.
- Stay in touch with your abroad network. Keep the relationships you built abroad alive by staying connected with host families, roommates, or local friends.
- Use campus resources. The Wellness Center, student organizations, and the Study Abroad Office are all here to support your transition.
- Get involved globally on campus. Attend language exchanges, international events, or join clubs aligned with your interests abroad.
- Share your story. Helping others navigate the study abroad process and learn can be a positive reflection opportunity for study abroad alumni and way to connect with students with similar interests.
- Talk with family and friends. Share how your experiences changed you and invite them into your journey.
- Find a local consulate or cultural organization. If you studied in a country with a consulate in Chicago, check out cultural events or gatherings to stay connected.
