Course Approval and Credit Transfer

Loyola Study Abroad offers an expansive list of approved programs. Students participating in one of Loyola’s approved study abroad programs earn LUC Credit towards graduation. Depending on the program type you select, you may be required to go through an additional step to determine the degree requirement your coursework abroad will fulfill at Loyola.

Loyola-Managed Programs

Courses taken at the Rome Center or on a Loyola faculty-led program are Loyola courses and do not require any additional review. The courses you are registered in for study abroad are the exact same courses that will appear on your academic record once your program ends.

Rome Center: Students register themselves in courses via LOCUS for the Rome Center.

Faculty-led: All faculty-led courses are “department consent,” meaning that the Study Abroad Office or sponsoring department will register committed students prior to the course start date. While some faculty-led courses taught abroad fulfill Core, Writing Intensive, and Engaged Learning requirements, when taught abroad, it is not always the case, and you should reference the program brochure page for the official designation.

Affiliate, Jesuit Affiliate, or Exchange/Direct Enroll Programs

If you plan to study abroad on an affiliate or exchange program, you will need to make sure your courses taken abroad fit into your Loyola academic plan. To do so, you will need to submit your study abroad courses for approval before departure. Ideally, you will submit them for approval before registering for the courses with the affiliate/exchange partner.

The course approval process is required for two reasons:

  1. Confirm the equivalency between Loyola courses and courses taken abroad, and
  2. Confirm that the host university or program center course will fulfill major, minor, Core, Honors, or Engaged Learning requirements.

Loyola students must have their study abroad courses pre-approved in order for the credits taken abroad to fulfill major, minor, Core, Honors, or Engaged Learning requirements. Study abroad courses not submitted or approved via the course approval process will automatically transfer back as general elective Loyola credits. Some students need general elective credits, while others do not. It is important to work with your academic advisor to determine which credit type, if any, you need to fulfill while studying abroad to stay on track towards graduation.
